Generally, the safety purpose of lockout/tagout is to prevent machinery or equipment from unexpected startup or release of hazardous energy while the machinery or equipment is being serviced or maintained. Keep in mind that lockout/tagout safety is more than just turning off the electricity. It means controlling the release of hazardous energy as well.
